How to Set Up eSIM on iPhone

Works for iPhone XS and later — including iPhone 15, 16, and all eSIM-only US models. The whole process takes under 5 minutes.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

    Check eSIM compatibility

Go to Settings → General → About. Look for "Available SIMs" or "eSIM" under the IMEI section. iPhones from XS (2018) onward support eSIM. iPhone 14 and later (US models) are eSIM-only.

  2. 2

    Buy your Orbitelo eSIM plan

Choose a plan for your destination on Orbitelo. After purchase you'll receive a QR code by email and in your account — keep it handy.

  3. 3

    Open eSIM settings

Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data) → Add eSIM. On iOS 16 and later you may also tap "Add eSIM" directly from the Cellular screen.

  4. 4

    Scan the QR code

Tap "Use QR Code" and scan the QR code from your Orbitelo email or account page. If you can't scan it, tap "Enter Details Manually" and type the activation code.

  5. 5

    Label and activate

iOS will ask you to label the new plan (e.g. "Travel eSIM"). Follow the prompts to finish setup. The plan may show as inactive until you land — that's normal.

  6. 6

Set data roaming before you fly

Go to Settings → Cellular → your Travel eSIM plan → turn on Data Roaming. Keep your primary line active for calls/SMS if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which iPhones support eSIM?

iPhone XS and later support eSIM. iPhone XR, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 16 series all support dual SIM (nano-SIM + eSIM or dual eSIM). US iPhone 14 and later are eSIM-only — no physical SIM tray.

Can I have two eSIMs active at once?

iPhone 13 and later support dual eSIM (two active eSIMs simultaneously). On older models (XS–12), you can store multiple eSIMs but only use one at a time.

What if the QR code scan doesn't work?

Ensure your current internet connection is active before scanning. If scanning fails, choose 'Enter Details Manually' and type the SM-DP+ address and activation code from your Orbitelo account.

Does my iPhone need to be unlocked to use an eSIM?

Yes — your iPhone must be carrier-unlocked to use a third-party eSIM. Check with your carrier or go to Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock.
